Research in Motion trying to block Ericsson-Nortel deal V.J. | , midi août 1, 2009 2009-08-01

BlackBerry phones manufacturer, Research in Motion, is adding pressure on the Canadian government to review or even block Ericsson’s $1.13 billion bid for most of Nortel’s wireless assets.

Although, the Canadian mobile phone manufacturer is officially opposing the Ericsson-Nortel deal, RIM’s motives remain unknown. The company did not elaborate on its motives. RIM said, however, that it wants the wireless assets to remain in Canadian hands, writes Fierce Wireless.

Analysts have pointed out that RIM may want to run Nortel’s CDMA business or could hire Nortel’s LTE engineers in order to design 4G capable phones. RIM’s intervention might be successful as a series of Canadian officials have had similar statements saying that Nortel’s assets will remain in Canada.
